Puppy Growling

At first, a puppy growling may appear to be a cute new behaviour. Now consider the thought of an older dog growling. Left to develop, this “cute new behaviour” can lead to all sorts of problems later in your dog’s life, including barking, biting, anxiety, and aggression problems.

No owner wants to feel intimidated by their dog growling at them or other family members. Nor do they want to be embarrassed by their dog growling at the postman, or every time a stranger passes by.

A puppy or dog will often growl when they feel threatened. For new puppy owners, the best solution to stop puppy growling is to nip it in the bud early on. Luckily however, learning how to stop dog growling can be done at any stage in your dog’s life. Some key tips to follow are:

  • Never punish or hit your dog – You must never punish or hit a dog for growling. Doing so may stop a dog growling temporarily, however would then lead to more aggression and snapping behaviours in the future. The best solution is simply to allow it to continue. Your puppy or dog will soon realise that there is nothing to be worried about.

  • Growling around children – Explain to your children that when your puppy or dog begins to growl, they should immediately stop doing whatever they were doing, as this is an obvious that the dog is becoming annoyed with their activity. When this happens your children should back away slowly. This helps from further antagonizing your puppy or dog.
  • Growling around men – Puppies and dogs will growl when they are intimidated by somebody. Sometimes sheer size is enough to threaten a puppy or dog. For this reason, many puppies and dogs tend to only growl around men. When this occurs, a man should squat, and bring himself to the same level as the dog. Approach them gently with an extended hand, (palm facing up) and talk to the dog in a calm and gentle voice.
  • Possessive growling – Some puppies and dogs will growl when they are eating and somebody gets close. This growling is generally a result of them being possessive about their food, and they scared that it is going to be taken away. This behaviour can be corrected by choosing an adult which the dog trusts, and while speaking in a soft reassuring voice, get them to start feeding the dog and staying close to him while he is eating.
  • Consider visiting the vet – Finally, if you find your dog growling for no apparent reason, or he is constantly snapping, it may be might best to visit your local vet. Here, a medical check can show any hormonal balances, neurophysiologic functions or allergies, if any. These symptoms can sometimes lead to puppy growling, or growling dog behaviour, and correcting them could stop him from growling.
