Puppy Leash Training

how to leash train a puppy

As a new puppy owner, you should keep in mind that only a well behaved puppy can become a well behaved dog. In this regard, training a puppy in the correct manner is essential. One of the first challenges many new puppy owners face, is the challenge of how to leash train a puppy.

Learning how to leash train a puppy is a crucial skill to master not only for you, but for your puppy’s benefit too. One major benefit of leash training a puppy is that they are much safer and more manageable, plus it means walkies is an experience you can both look forward to and enjoy.

At this young age puppies love to play and move around. However, by leash training your puppy at an early age, not only does it help your puppy to grow as a well behaved and a lovable dog, but you can keep them under control, and stop them from causing a mess when required.

How To Leash Train A Puppy

When learning how to leash train a puppy, you must not expect your puppy to immediately understand what is required of him. However by following the steps below, and by clearly communicating to your puppy what is acceptable behavior on the leash, and what is not, your puppy will be properly leash trained within a couple of weeks.

  • Step 1 – Purchase your new pup a collar. This can be done as early as the first day you bring him home. A simple light weight leather collar is ideal for this task and will help them to become more familiar and comfortable with it.

Then while your puppy is playing or distracted, gently fit the collar around his neck, making sure it is neither too loose nor too tight. Yourr puppy may try to remove or scratch it off, however it is important you leave it on at this stage. Later on when he has settled down and forgotten about it you may wish to take it off.

  • Step 2 – The next step is then to introduce your puppy to the leash. This can be done as soon as they are used to their new collar. At this early stage, your goal is simply to get them comfortable with the leash, and to show them that their is nothing to be worried about. Again a light weight, thin leash is ideal for this step. You can of course then buy a more durable leather leash later on after they have been properly leash trained if you wish. Simply attach the leash to their collar, then allow them to drag it about the house after them for a while (always under your supervision of course). They will then soon become used to it.
  • Step 3 – When your puppy has become accustomed to the weight and feel of his new leash you can then go ahead and pick up the other end of the leash. In the beginning, keep these leash training sessions short, sharp and fun. You can begin by simply walking them about the house while they are on the leash. Keep plenty of slack on the leash, and when they are walking along on a loose leash give them plenty of praise, petting and even some treats. When your puppy pulls on the leash, stop immediately. Ensure you don’t pull him back by the leash with you, but rather, call them back over to you and praise them when they come. It is important you do not continue walking while your puppy pulls on the leash, since this only rewards their behavior and reinforces the habit.
  • Your puppy must learn that when he pulls on the leash, this will get him nowhere. Instead, if he wishes to continue walking, it has to be on a loose leash by your side. This also applies if your puppy sits down when you are walking. Do not pull him forward towards you, but simply just call him over and reward or praise him when he comes, and set off walking again with your puppy by your side.
