Puppy toilet training is an essential stage in every new puppy owner’s life. Yet many new puppy owners often consider potty training as throwing down a few old newspapers and hoping for the best. When in fact, learning how to potty train a puppy requires vigilance, patience, commitment and above all, consistency.

Virtually every new owner can expect a few accidents in the beginning. Just like a young child, puppies are of course still only developing at this stage. However, by following the guidelines below, you will soon have a firm understanding of how to potty train a puppy.

As with all puppy training tips, the more consistent you are in puppy toilet training, the faster your puppy will learn what is expected of him. Some key tips to follow are:

  • Establish a routine – By establishing a routine, your puppy will learn that there are times to eat, times to play, and times to potty. Puppies can generally hold their bladder for one hour for every month of their age. So if for example, your puppy is 2 months old, you can expect him to be able to hold it in for around about 2 hours. Bathroom breaks left longer that this can result in an accident.
  • Bring your puppy outside frequently – Bring your puppy outside at least every 2 hours. Not only will this allow him to do his business, but it will also help set up a routine. This should be done as soon as he wakes up, after eating or drinking, and during and after playing.
  • Choose a bathroom spot outsideUsing a leash, always bring your puppy to the same spot. Then, while your puppy is doing his business, use a command such as “go potty”. Eventually this command can then be used to remind your puppy what to do.
  • Reward your puppy – Praise your puppy or give him a treat immediately after he is finished doing his business. When puppy toilet training, it’s important to remember to do this while he is still outside, and not when he has returned to the house.
  • Create a regular feeding schedule – By feeding your puppy at the same time each day, the chances are he will potty at the same times as well. This then makes puppy toilet training easier for both of you.
  • Remove your puppy’s water dish – Remove your puppy’s water dish a couple of hours before bedtime. This will reduce the chance that he will need to potty later in the night. While learning how to potty train a puppy, if your puppy needs to go to the toilet during the night, do not make a big deal about it, otherwise they may think it is playtime. Turn on as few lights as possible, take your puppy outside without talking to him, and allow him to go to the toilet.
  • Be proactive – When learning how to potty train a puppy, keep an eye on him when he’s indoors, and don’t give him an opportunity to soil indoors.
